Sarah Bell earns second Academic All-Conference honor of career
IRVING, Texas -- Southern Miss junior setter Sarah Bell has placed on the C-USA All-Academic Team for the second consecutive season.
The San Antonio, Texas, native has 3,844 assists in her career and is within 84 of taking over the No. 3 spot in the school record book. This year, she has hit a career-best .368, marking back-to-back years she has improved the mark by 54 and 56 points.
Away from the court, she boasts a 4.0 GPA in biological sciences.
Her best-career outing came on Sept. 22 in the league opener against eventual champion North Texas. Bell posted 75 assists, the most of anyone in Division I for the season. She had the most assists by any Golden Eagle since at least 2000 (record of 86 was set in 1998), and there have been only seven other instances this century where someone from Southern Miss cracked 70 in a match.
Twice this season, in sweeps of Charlotte and FIU, she posted 46 assists which marked a career-best for a three-set match. She also had 45 in an Aug. 30 sweep over UL Lafayette.
Bell also now has 21, 50-assist matches in her career.
Head coach Amanda Berkley now has seven Academic All-Conference selections in her five years as head coach.
Southern Miss (19-11, 9-5) hits the road Wednesday for the Conference USA Championships in Bowling Green, Ky. The Golden Eagles will take on No. 3-seeded Rice at 2 p.m., and the match will air on CUSA.tv.
