Volleyball hosts FIU Saturday for Senior Day
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- It's closing time on the 2017 home campaign for Southern Miss Volleyball, and the Golden Eagles look to end it on the highest note with a 12 p.m. battle against FIU for Senior Day.
Natalie Druhan (Mobile, Ala.) and Kelsey Chambers (Rosharon, Texas) will be honored pregame for their four-year contributions in the Black and Gold. Druhan intends to complete her exercise science degree while Chambers is a nursing major. The match itself can be found on CUSA.tv.
Two milestones are on the docket for the Golden Eagles. Kylie Grandy, a junior, needs five kills to reach 1,000 for her career, and Druhan is just four digs from 1,000 as well.
The Golden Eagles improved to 41-10 at home since the start of the 2014 season with a clean sweep of LA Tech on Friday. The squad hit .383, its second-best performance against a C-USA team this year, and Druhan and Chambers became the all-time winningest senior class in history, besting the 2016 group which accomplished its feat in a five-set win over Rice on Senior Day.
Last year's matchup, also late in the season, saw Southern Miss take a 3-1 victory. The Panthers' Katie Hogan rattled home 20 kills, but Grandy, Stephany Purdue and Chanel Joyce combined for 42 on the day. This is only the seventh meeting between the two schools all-time, with Southern Miss also winning 3-2 in the 2015 meeting.
FIU (6-15, 4-9 C-USA) is tied for ninth with UAB and trailing Marshall by a match for the eighth-seed, but went a combined 0-3 against those squads in the tiebreaker scenario.
The Golden Eagles have held eight of their last nine opponents to sub-.200 hitting percentages.
