HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss Volleyball's Alexis Coombs and Stephany Purdue were both voted SAAC Student-Athletes of the Week for their recent performances.
Coombs totaled a team-high eight blocks on the weekend and also saved the day for the Golden Eagles on Sunday in a 3-2 win over Rice. Her block assist with senior Chanel Joyce on Senior Day saved match point in what became a wild 32-30 third-set win that paved the way for the 0-2 comeback. The sophomore from Leesburg, Va., currently ranks second on the team in blocks as well.
Purdue, a native of Mesa, Ariz., on Sunday became Southern Miss’ all-time career kill leader. It also happened in the pivotal third set of a 2-0 comeback win against 9-3 Rice. The Golden Eagles won that set 32-30 and eventually 15-13 in the final. It was her fourth 20-kill match of the season, and she now has 1,577 in her career. Her senior class on Sunday also became the winningest in program history with 81 wins. Her 10 digs gives her seven double-doubles on the year as well. She has also hit .300 or better in 10 matches this season.
The Golden Eagles conclude the regular season Thursday and Saturday at Louisiana Tech and FIU. They are currently in a three-way tie for Conference USA's two-seed.
