HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The calendar has turned to November, and Southern Miss Volleyball will look to end its 2016 Reed Green Coliseum campaign on a high note when it hosts UAB on Friday night at 6 and Rice at noon on Sunday.
It will be the last home weekend for seniors Chanel Joyce, Stephany Purdue and Makareta Rademakers.
Southern Miss (18-7, 7-3 C-USA) has won three of its last four against UAB, including 3-0 and 3-1 wins last year. Purdue combined for 32 kills and 17 digs in the two matches, and Kylie Grandy recorded two career-highs in the Oct. 4 win (24 digs and five service aces). The Golden Eagles are looking to win 20-plus matches for the third consecutive year, a first in school history, and have already clinched a C-USA Tournament berth.
Purdue also needs 22 kills to tie and 23 to break the all-time Southern Miss record (Tosha Barnicoat, 1,566 from 1996-99).
Speaking of service aces, the Golden Eagles had a field day against North Texas on Sunday, recording 13. Those were the most in a match since a 2006 contest with Troy.
Sarah Bell on Monday received C-USA Co-Setter of the Week honors for the second time this season. She recorded 50 assists or more for the sixth time this season and 14th of her career. Bell is nine away from 1,000 on the year and currently ranks No. 13 nationally (11.39/set). The Golden Eagles have been honored seven times by C-USA for weekly awards this year.
UAB (11-16, 3-8 C-USA) will look to use its Amber Treace and Erika Zembyla combination to the best of its ability. The duo is ranked No. 4 and 6 in C-USA for assists and kills, respectively. The Blazers also close their season with matches against FAU and Marshall.
