Volleyball hits road to battle UAB on Friday night
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- There are only four regular-season matches left for the Southern Miss volleyball team, and the next one on the schedule is Friday night at UAB for a 7 p.m. tilt.
Live video of the match will be available on CUSA.tv.
Southern Miss suffered a five-set defeat to 22-2 North Texas, falling 15-13 in the final. Two days prior, the squad rallied in each set for a road sweep at Charlotte.
Southern Miss (16-10, 6-4 C-USA) has won three in a row against the Blazers and trails 24-23 in the all-time series. The Golden Eagles soared through last season's matchup on Nov. 4. Kylie Grandy had three aces and the squad hit .317, its fourth time going over .300 in C-USA play for the season.
Grandy this season has 3.92 kills per set against C-USA foes, which ranks fourth in the league. She joins UTSA's Marijeta Runjic as the only ones to rank in the top-10 for kills and aces. Grandy's 48 kills over her last three outings are the most of any-such span in her career.
Since league play began, Southern Miss is fifth in opponent hitting percentage (.206) and sixth on the offensive end (.219). UAB ranks 10th (.232) and ninth (.179) in those respective categories.
UAB (11-16, 4-7 C-USA) is coming off a pair of losses to two of the top teams in C-USA, first falling in five sets on the road to UTSA and then a sweep at WKU in a Friday-Sunday swing. The Blazers sit a half-game out of the final spot for the C-USA Championships. Petra Silic and her .343 hitting percentage will key their attack. The Golden Eagles will counter with Catherine Repsher and Alexis Coombs on the defensive end. Repsher leads the team with 1.01 blocks/set for the season, while Coombs is No. 10 in league play with 1.00/set.
