Trio of Golden Eagles Receive Weekly SAAC Awards
Both volleyball and football cruised to a combined 3-0 record
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss Volleyball's Sarah Bell and Kylie Grandy join football's Dylan Bradley as Southern Miss SAAC Student-Athletes of the Week for their recent performances.
Bell was also named C-USA Co-Setter of the Week on Monday. She entered the weekend leading C-USA in assists for league matches-only and was No. 12 nationally, then did more of the same with 85 assists over Southern Miss’ two wins. Her 50 against UNT marked the sixth time this year and 14th time in her young career she’s reached that plateau. The three service aces against North Texas tied a personal-best and helped the Golden Eagles to their best showing in that category since 2006. Bell, a San Antonio native, has also held a team-high .298 hitting percentage in her limited attack role. Bell now has eight double-doubles this year.
Grandy, who hails from Rolesville, N.C., led the offensive charge in what was a very diverse sweep for the Golden Eagles. She registered a match-high 12 kills against Charlotte, one of three Golden Eagles in double-figures there, and then had the exact same feat against North Texas where two other teammates had 13. Her nice .345 hitting percentage also included four service aces. Two of those came on Sunday, where Southern Miss had a whopping 13 that marked its most in a decade (2006 vs. Troy, also 13). Grandy is now third in overall matches and sixth in C-USA play for service aces. She has recorded double-digit kills in 12 of her last 13 outings.
The two sophomores and the rest of the Golden Eagles will look to finish the home campaign strong against UAB on Friday at 6 p.m. and Rice on Sunday at noon for Senior Day.
Bradley was the second-leading tackler on the team with 46 this season registered four stops (two solos), including 1.5 sacks for 12 yards during the Marshall contest. He added his second blocked kick of the season, swatting away a fourth-quarter field goal attempt. The senior from Macon, Miss., leads the team with 11.5 tackles for loss as well as 6.5 sacks. He looks to become the first Golden Eagle defensive lineman to lead the squad in tackles for a season since Jamie Collins registered 92 in 2012.
Southern Miss football is back in action Saturday at 2:30 p.m. against Charlotte.
