Volleyball Eagles Hit the Road For a Pair of C-USA Matches

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball team hits the road for weekend series against Conference USA foes UTEP on Oct. 31 and UTSA on Nov. 2.

Southern Miss (18-9, 7-3) is coming off a 2-0 weekend with a win over UAB and Louisiana Tech.

Four Golden Eagles have 200 or more kills on the season as sophomore Stephany Purdue leads the group with 311 kills for a 3.27 per set average. She is followed by Quinci Hayward with 302 (3.21 kps), Jasmine Crowell has 277 (2.92 kps) and Lydia Bonner with 205 (2.25 kps). Mary Pursell patrols the back row for a 4.27 dig per set average. Kristen Fleming guides the offense with 9.38 assists per set. As a team, USM is averaging 14.20 kills on .215 hitting, 14.97 digs and 2.06 team blocks per set.

Volleyball Outlasts UTEP in Five, Advances to Quarterfinals
The Southern Miss volleyball team got strong performances from Quinci Hayward and Jasmine Crowell in helping the Golden Eagles out-dual UTEP 3-2 in the first round of the Conference USA Volleyball Tournament Thursday afternoon.

UTEP (4-17, 2-8) is coming off a pair of losses to Western Kentucky and at Marshall. The Miners are led offensively by Coline Coessens who owns a team-best 217 kills for a 2.93 per set average. Sara Villa leads the team on defense with 205 digs (3.25 dps) while Lindsey Larson handles the setting duties. Larson leads the team with 671 assists (8.95 aps). As a team, UTEP is averaging 11.13 kills on .134 hitting, 14.83 digs and 2.15 blocks per set.

This is the 14th meeting between the two schools in a series that began in 1995. Southern Miss leads the overall series 9-3.

UTSA enters the weekend with a 15-7 record overall and 11-0 in league play. The duo of Dempsey Thornton and Dajana Boskovic pace the Roadrunners offensively with 327 (3.72 kps) and 279 (4.16 kps) kills, respectively. Annie Kunes leads the team in digs 355 (4.49 dps) while Jessica Waldrip guides the offense with 10.55 assists per set. The team is averaging 13.58 kills on a .233 hitting clip, 16.11 digs and 2.12 blocks per set.

This will be the fifth meeting between the Golden Eagles and UTSA. The series began in 1994. The Roadrunners lead the overall series 4-0 over the Eagles.

Following the weekend, Southern Miss returns home to host Western Kentucky (1/7) and Florida Atlantic (11/9).
