HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss SAAC has named volleyball's Sarah Bell and soccer's Stephanie Garcia as its Student-Athletes of the Week for their recent performances.
The sophomore Bell entered the weekend with a C-USA only-matches high 12 assists per set and did just that with 36 more in Friday’s sweep of Louisiana Tech. She also had five kills and no errors for an impressive .714 hitting percentage, rivaling only Chanel Joyce’s performance on Sunday at UTEP (14 kills, no errors and .700 hitting percentage).
Bell, a San Antonio native, and her squad will be home the next four matches, beginning with Friday's 6 p.m. tilt with Charlotte.
Garcia, a sophomore from Houston, recorded the first hat trick for Southern Miss since 2013 on Sunday against Middle Tennessee. She took five shots in the game and scored three of them in 60 minutes. Garcia continued to attack the Blue Raiders defense and created plenty of scoring opportunities for the Golden Eagles.
Garcia also scored her third goal of the season against UAB on Friday along with one other shot after playing 78 minutes, giving her four of the Golden Eagles' five goals on the week. Garcia has played in all 16 games, and overall she has six goals and five assists. Half of her goals have this season have been game-winners.
The soccer Golden Eagles finish their season Friday at 7 p.m. CT at UTEP.
