HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball team is back on the road traveling to Middle Tennessee and Tulsa on Oct. 25 and 27, respectively. The Golden Eagles face the Blue Raiders on Friday at 7 p.m. and take on the Golden Hurricane Sunday at 1 p.m.
Golden Eagle Preview
The Golden Eagles improved to 12-10 overall with a 3-4 record in league play with a 3-0 sweep of Louisiana Tech on Sunday, Oct. 20. So far in 2013, four Eagles are averaging 2.00 kills per set or more, including sophomore Quinci Hayward who leads the team with 4.09 kills per set. Freshman Stephany Purdue and junior Jasmine Crowell are next 2.42 and 2.40 kills per set, respectively. Sophomore Elise Ames is averaging 2.25 kills per set. Junior Kristen Fleming has been the primary setter this season, averaging 10.80 assists per set. Sophomore libero Mary Pursell has a team-high 4.71 digs per set.
Southern Miss vs. Middle Tennessee
The Golden Eagles are 1-1 all-time against the Blue Raiders. Southern Miss won the first meeting in a 3-2 in 1994, but lost the last meeting in 2-3 in 2010 in the Blue Raider Bash.
Scouting the Blue Raiders
Middle Tennessee is 13-8 overall with a 5-2 record in Conference USA play. The Blue Raiders lost to Louisville on Tuesday. Chelsea Ross paces Middle Tennessee with a 3.40 kill per set average with Jale Hervey and Tyler Richardson next at 2.83 and 2.04 kills per set, respectively. Shelby Anderton and Ailime De Freitas guide the offensive with 6.35 and 4.86 assists per set. Kendall Howard is averaging 4.13 digs per set while Monet Marshall is averaging 1.22 blocks per set.
Southern Miss vs. Tulsa
Southern Miss is 2-8 all-time against the Golden Hurricane. The last time the Golden Eagles defeated Tulsa was in 2009.
Scouting the Golden Hurricane
Tulsa is 18-4 overall and 7-0 against C-USA opponents while riding a 10-match winning streak. Kellie Culbertson leads the Golden Hurricane with a 3.50 kill per set average. Valerie El Houssine and Erica Bohannon are averaging 2.75 and 2.69 kills per set. Brooke Berryhill leads the defense with 4.49 digs per set while Bailey Clampitt and Genesis Viera combine to guide the Hurricane with 4.78 and 7.49 assists per set.
The Golden Eagles are back home for a match against East Carolina on Nov. 1.
