Volleyball Team Readies for UAB and Louisiana Tech

Golden Eagles ready to face a pair of C-USA foes this weekend

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball returns home to host a pair of Conference USA matches with visits from UAB and Louisiana Tech. The Golden Eagles meet the Blazers on Friday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. before facing the Lady Techsters on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m.

The Golden Eagles improved to 16-9 and 5-3 in conference play with a 3-2 (17-25, 23-14, 25-23, 22-25, 17-15) victory over FIU on Sunday.

Golden Eagle Volleyball Falls to UAB in Five
The Southern Miss volleyball team dropped their fifth-straight match, falling at UAB 3-2 (16-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-22, 8-15) in the conference opener Friday night.

In the last five matches, the Golden Eagles averaged 15.00 kills per set on 209 hitting, 14.15 assists per set, .90 aces per set, 14.0 digs per set and 2.28 blocks per set.

Sophomore Stephany continues to lead the squad with 284 kills (3.23 kills per set) and junior Quinci Hayward is next with 280 kills (3.22 kills per set). Senior Setter Kristen Fleming has dished out 772 assists (9.08 assists per set). Junior Mary Pursell is tops on the team with 366 digs (4.26 digs per set), while senior Jasmine Crowell has a team-best 84 total blocks (0.95 blocks per set).

UAB enters the weekend with a 6-17 record and 3-5 in league play. The Blazers are winners of their last two matches. Gabby Deshotel leads the Blazer attack with 216 kills (2.70 kps) with Sydney Nelson next with 204 (2.46 kps). Defensively, Libero Alexis Howell is averaging 3.01 digs per set. Setter Amber Treace has recorded 596 assists for an 8.28 per set average.

UAB is 23-20 all-time against the Golden Eagles. UAB won the first match with Southern Miss on Oct., 25, 1982, 2-1. USM won its first match against UAB on Oct. 14, 1985, 3-2. The Blazers have won the last three matches of the series.

Louisiana Tech heads into the weekend with an 8-14 record overall, including a 0-8 record in the league. Rebecca Regden leads the team with 270 kills (3.60 kills per set). Setters Adria Morales and Brooke Short combined for a 10.7 assists per set average. Alejandra Aviles has a team-best 270 digs (3.86 dps). The Lady Techsters are averaging 11.92 kills on a .171 hitting clip, 14.55 digs and 1.94 blocks.

USM owns a 10-3 record against the Lady Techsters and have won the last five outings. Earlier this season, the Golden Eagles secured a 3-0 win on Sept. 22 in Ruston, La.

The Golden Eagles return to the road for two Texas matches with UTEP on Oct. 31 at 7 p.m., followed by a visit to UTSA on Nov. 2 for a 1 p.m. start.
