Volleyball Set to Host UTEP
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss volleyball team returns home to host a pair of Conference USA matches as the Golden Eagles host UTEP on Friday at 6 p.m. and conclude with a Sunday match against UAB at 1 p.m.
The Golden Eagles enters the contest with a 19-7 record overall and 6-3 in league play following a 3-1 loss at Florida Atlantic, looking to bounce back. Sarah Bell and Kylie Grandy recorded double-doubles while Mary Pursell picked up 21 digs.
Offensively, Stephany Purdue continues to lead the team. She is averaging a team-best 3.88 kills per set. Grandy is next at 2.37 kills and owns a team-high 44 aces. Grandy is also averaging 2.52 digs per set. Sarah Bell guides the offense, dishing out 9.71 assists per set. Defensively, Pursell paces the backrow, averaging 4.57 digs per set while Elise Ames is averaging 1.15 blocks per set.
Southern Miss is averaging 12.91 kills on .193 hitting, 1.16 aces, 14.97 digs and 2.21 team blocks.
UTEP comes into the match with a 7-15 record and 1-7 in C-USA play. Coline Coessens leads the team offensively with 3.22 kills per set while Sarah Villa paces the team defensively at 4.12 digs per set. Lindsey Larson is averaging 8.85 assists per set in guiding the team.
The Miners are averaging 11.52 kills on .159 hitting, 17.66 digs and 2.34 team blocks.
Southern Miss leads the all-time series against UTEP 10-5. The first meeting between the two teams took place in El Paso in 1995. This is the 16th meeting between the two teams.
