HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss volleyball team will begin its second two-conference match road trip of the season this weekend when it plays at Middle Tennessee at 7 p.m. CT Friday night.
The Golden Eagles (15-6, 4-2 C-USA) are 3-2 in the all-time series after winning sweeping the 2015 meeting at home. Stephany Purdue had a team-high 14 kills as the squad hit .277 as a team (second-highest in a C-USA match on the season) and improved to 17-5.
Purdue now has 1,499 kills in her career, just 68 away from breaking the all-time career record that Tosha Barnicoat holds from 1996-99.
Southern Miss more recently won in straight sets versus Louisiana Tech last Friday night, building up an 18-7 lead in the first and having another big lead in the second before prevailing in a much tighter third battle. It was the ninth straight win for the Gold and Black in that series.
Sarah Bell on Thursday posted 36 more assists in the sweep, keeping her in the C-USA lead at 12.00 assists per set. She is also No. 17 nationally. Bell even added five kills on seven attempts for a crisp .714 hitting percentage.
Purdue also ranks third in C-USA for kills per set (3.85) while Catherine Repsher, a three-time Freshman of the Week honoree, is sixth in blocks (1.05/set). Natalie Druhan has quietly risen the ranks to No. 3 in digs (4.20 per set). Druhan is Southern Miss' lone Tennessee tie, having attended Collierville High School in the Memphis area.
The Blue Raiders' Delaney Gallagher is No. 4 in the league for service aces (0.52 per set), which happens to be where the team as a whole ranks (also its best category). Also on the service front, Southern Miss committed just three errors its last time out, tying a season-low.
