Volleyball Eagles takes on FIU and Louisiana Tech

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss volleyball team (17-6, 4-2) welcomes FIU and Louisiana Tech on Oct. 16 and Oct. 18, respectively, in Conference USA action. The Golden Eagles will face the Panthers at 6 p.m. on Friday before facing Louisiana Tech at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Golden Eagle Preview
The Southern Miss volleyball team enters the weekend with a 17-6 record overall and 4-2 in Conference USA after going 1-1 last weekend.
Stephany Purdue continues to lead the Golden Eagles offensively, averaging 4.11 kills per set on .202 hitting. She also is averaging 2.30 digs per set. Kylie Grandy is next at 2.31 kills per set while leading the team with 40 service aces. Sarah Bell guides the team with 9.60 assists per set. She has accumulated 1-9 kills and averages 2.34 digs per set.
As a team, the Golden Eagles are averaging 12.97 kills on a .200 hitting clip, 1.22 aces, 14.77 digs and 2.18 team blocks.
Scouting the Panthers
FIU is out to an 11-7 overall record and 5-2 record in the league. Lucia Castro is at the helm of the Panther offense, pacing the squad with 3.36 kills per frame. Following Castro is Jennifer Ene, Katie Hogan and Gloria Levorin, who all have registered more than 100 kills in 2015. On the defensive side, Adriana McLamb is leading the team with 202 digs, averaging 3.81 per set.
As a team, FIU is averaging 12.11 kills on .201 hitting, 1.38 aces, 14.58 digs and 2.56 team blocks.
Southern Miss vs. FIU
This is just the fifth meeting between Southern Miss and FIU. The Panthers lead the series with Southern Miss 3-1 dating back to the 1979, the first season of Southern Miss volleyball.
Scouting the LA Tech
Louisiana Tech owns a record of 7-12 overall and 1-5 in conference play heading into the weekend. LA Tech will play at North Texas before traveling to Southern Miss for a Sunday matchup.
Marta Monne leads the team offensively with 3.04 kills per set while Helena Gunnarsdottir, Angela Papach and Alexa Morales have recorded over 120 kills each. Alejandra Aviles tops the team with 4.24 digs per set. Adria Morales and Brooke Short runs the offense, averaging 5.81 and 5.28 assists per set, respectively.
As a team, Louisiana Tech is averaging 11.60 kills on .171 hitting, 13.13 digs and 1.60 team blocks.
Southern Miss vs. Louisiana Tech
This is the 15th meeting between the two teams. Southern Miss leads the overall series 12-3, dating back to 1987. The Golden Eagles have won the last seven meetings including the first meeting this season.
Following the Louisiana Tech match, the Golden Eagles travel to Florida Atlantic on Oct. 21 for a 6 p.m. match.
