Golden Eagles return to action Friday at Louisiana Tech
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Three road matches down, one to go for Southern Miss in its midseason travel marathon. Next up for the team is a trip to Ruston, La., to play Louisiana Tech at 7 p.m. CT Friday.
The game will air on CUSA.tv with live stats available here.
The squad looks to continue its astounding success in the head-to-head matchup, which features a current 10-match win streak. Last season, the team picked up home and away sweeps after winning both the previous season in five sets.
Southern Miss (12-8, 2-2 C-USA) held LA Tech to .159 and .113 hitting percentages in each 2016 match, with Kylie Grandy recording double-digit kills (including a .435 clip on 11 kills) in the home edition. This season, Grandy has tied freshman Chandler Marshall for the team lead with 226 kills, and her 29 aces have helped her to a No. 3 ranking in the conference.
The Golden Eagles' current road swing began with a four-set win at Marshall on Sept. 29, a sweep of Jackson State on Oct. 2 and a three-set defeat at No. 27 WKU last Friday. The team was originally scheduled to face UTEP on Sunday, but Hurricane Nate forced the teams to reschedule to Monday, Oct. 16 at 1 p.m.
On the bright side from Friday's loss to the first-place Lady Toppers, Southern Miss has won matches each of the last three times it was coming off a losing sweep (dating back to middle of 2015 season).
Southern Miss holds a higher league statistical standing over LA Tech in every category except for service aces and digs. Madeline Davis (.340 hitting percentage, seventh in C-USA) is the top offensive threat on a squad with four seniors and one junior. The Lady Techsters (6-13, 1-4 C-USA) fell in their first four league outings before defeating UAB at home.
Also on the statistical front and beside what was covered with Grandy earlier, Natalie Druhan and Alexis Coombs both rank second in C-USA matches only for digs (4.38/set) and blocks (1.50/set), respectively.
