Volleyball Readies for Weekend against North Texas and Marshall
North Texas match has been designated as Breast Cancer Awareness match.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball team gets ready for a pair of matches this weekend when North Texas and Marshall visit Reed Green Coliseum on Oct. 10 and Oct. 12, respectively.
The Golden Eagles meet the Mean Green at 7 p.m. in Reed Green Coliseum followed by a matchup with the Thundering Herd on Sunday at 12 p.m.
The North Texas match has been designated as Breast Cancer Awareness match. The first 100 fans will receive a pink t-shirt. Live stats and video will be available for both matches via a link at www.SouthernMiss.com.
Golden Eagle Volleyball Falls in Five to North Texas
The Southern Miss volleyball team dropped its second-straight Conference USA in with a 3-2 loss to North Texas a five-set match with scores of 25-21, 17-25, 25-18, 15-25, 8-15.
Southern Miss enters the weekend with a 13-8 record overall and 2-2 in C-USA play following a win over Charlotte last weekend.
Stephany Purdue and Quinci Hayward continue to lead the team offensively with 233 and 224 kills for a 3.24 and 3.15 per set averages, respectively. Jasmine Crowell adds 2.65 kills per set and Lydia Bonner is next with 2.17 kills per set. Kristen Fleming directs the offense at 8.23 assists per set, while Mary Pursell has a team-leading 4.13 digs per set average. Pursell is 39 digs away from the 1,000 dig-plateau. Crowell also leads the team with 66 total blocks while Purdue has 26 aces. As a team, Southern Miss is averaging 13.93 kills per set on .218 hitting while averaging 14.90 digs per set and 1.90 blocks per set.
Scouting the Mean Green
North Texas is 12-6 and 3-2 in league play after posting a pair of wins over Louisiana Tech and Marshall last weekend. Carnae Dillard leads the Mean Green in kills with 343 (5.28 kps). Amy Henard guides the offense as she dishes out 9.74 assists per set. Dillard is also tops the defense with 3.38 digs per set. As a team, North Texas is hitting .237 with 13.74 kills per set, 1.69 service aces per set, 14.47 digs per set and 1.66 blocks per set.
The Series: Southern Miss vs. North Texas
Sothern Miss leads the series with North Texas 3-2 in a series that dates back to 1991. Southern Miss won the first meeting on Sept. 30, 1982 3-0. Last season, the Golden Eagles dropped a 3-2 decision to the Mean Green in Hattiesburg.
Scouting the Thundering Herd
Marshall currently sits at 9-10 on the season and 3-1 in league play. As a team, Marshall is hitting .167 with 12.21 kills per set, 1.07 aces per set, 14.39 digs per set and 2.03 blocks per set. Marshall uses a balanced offensive attack as four players have recorded over 100 kills. Ally Kiekover leads the group, averaging 2.67 kills per set. Closely behind are Cassie Weaver, Lauren Legge and Elyse Panick at 2.71 kps, 2.20 kps and 2.08 kps, respectively. Sammie Bane runs the offense and is averaging 8.19 assists per set, while Allie Kellerman paces the team with 3.47 digs per set.
The Series: Southern Miss vs. Marshall
Marshall leads the series against the Golden Eagles 11-7. The two squads first met on Oct. 7, 2005 in Huntington with the Herd winning 3-0. Last season, the Southern Miss won the only meeting between the two teams.
Southern Miss travels to Florida Atlantic (Oct. 17) and FIU (Oct. 19) for a pair of C-USA matches next weekend.
