HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss football's Curtis Mikell and volleyball's Stephany Purdue were named the school's SAAC Student-Athletes of the Week for their recent performances, as voted on by their peers.
Mikell tallied his first two career interceptions at UTEP. His first came with 3:14 to play in the second quarter and he then became the first Golden Eagle to pickoff two passes in the same game since Marquese Wheaton collected a pair of interceptions against SMU on Oct. 22, 2011, when his second pick was returned for 100 yards and a touchdown, tying the school record for longest interception (Kendrick Presley vs. Memphis, 11/26/11). His pick for a touchdown was the second for the Golden Eagles this season. Mikell, from Bassfield, Miss., added three solo tackles in the contest.
Southern Miss (3-1, 1-0 C-USA) hosts Rice on Saturday at 6 p.m.
Purdue maintained her high level of play in Southern Miss’ first two conference matches. Her 33 kills on the weekend rank third in C-USA among players who were in both matches. Purdue’s five assists at UNT tied a career-high as well and allowed Southern Miss to get the four-set road win (also added a service ace). The senior from Mesa, Ariz., is up to 1,455 kills in her career, just 111 away from tying the school record set in 1999.
The Golden Eagles (12-5, 1-1 C-USA) return home Friday for a 6 p.m. match against Marshall. It marks their first match in town since Aug. 30, the longest stretch since 2011.
