Volleyball Eagles Open Conference USA Play at UAB

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball team looks to snap a four-match losing streak as the Golden Eagles head to UAB to open Conference USA play on Friday.
Southern Miss (9-6) plays its ninth-straight match away from the friendly confines of Reed Green Coliseum. The Golden Eagles are coming off a winless weekend at the Rebel Classic last weekend. Elise Ames earned all-tournament honors for her performance.
Quinci Hayward continues to lead the team in kills with 213 for a 4.18 per set average while Stephany Purdue and Jasmine Crowell are next with 126 (2.47 k/s) and 124 (2.43 k/s) kills, respectively. Kristen Fleming guides the team at 10.78 assists per set while Mary Pursell paces the team defensively with 4.73 digs per set. Elise Ames is the top blocker with 47 and Crowell is next with 40. As a team, the Golden Eagles are averaging 13.51 kills on .229 hitting clip, averaging 14.63 digs, 1.20 aces and 1.86 team blocks.
UAB (11-5) is coming off a 1-2 weekend at Belmont Tournament. Sam Skinner leads the team with 4.19 kills per set on a .275 hitting clip while Sara Rishell is next at 3.12 kills per set on .335 hitting. Becca Howard is handing out 11.07 assists per set while Rachel Fairbanks picks up 4.54 digs per set on the back row. As a team, the Blazers are averaging 13.04 kills on .257 hitting, 1.39 aces, 13.61 digs and 2.70 blocks.
UAB leads the series 21-20 against Southern Miss dating back to 1981. This is the 42nd meeting between the two teams.
Southern Miss returns home to host North Texas on Oct. 4 in a 7 p.m. match in the annual Dig Pink Match.
