Volleyball Returns Home for First Time Since August; Readies for Rice
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball team returns to the friendly confines of Reed Green Coliseum for the first time since August and gets ready to face Rice in Conference USA action on Friday. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
Southern Miss is coming off a 3-0 sweep at Louisiana Tech. The Golden Eagles are 12-6 over and 1-0 in league play. Sophomore Stephany Purdue and junior Quinci Hayward lead a group of five with 100 or more kills on the season. Purdue is tops with a 3.25 per set average followed by Hayward at 3.12. Senior Jasmine Crowell adds 2.66 kills per set while junior Lydian Bonner is next at 2.19. Junior Mary Pursell guides the defense on the back with 4.02 digs per set while senior Alex Pfefferle is next at 2.90. Senior Kristen Fleming and sophomore Makareta Rademakers combine for 12.05 assists per set to guide the team.
Golden Eagle Volleyball Rallies For a 3-2 Victory over Rice
The Southern Miss volleyball team snapped a six-match losing streak, posting a 3-2 (25-22, 18-25, 20-25, 25-13, 15-8) set victory over Rice Sunday afternoon.
Rice comes into the match with a 10-4 record overall after a 3-1 win over Stephen F. Austin last week. This is the conference opener for the Owls. Leah Mikesky leads the team in kills with a 3.53 per set average while Chelsey Harris, Andi Bawcum and Jillian Humphrey add 2.66, 2.62 and 2.40 kills per set, respectively. Daniela Arenas is tops on the team with 4.15 digs per set. Sara Blasier guides the Owls with 10.81 assists per set. As a team, Rice is averaging 13.88 kills, 0.90 aces, 16.77 digs and 2.13 team blocks.
Rice leads the overall series against Southern Miss 10-4. The Golden Eagles won last year's meeting in Hattiesburg, 3-2.
Following the Rice match, Southern Miss will hit the road for a match at Middle Tennessee on Sunday. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
