Volleyball Travels to Last In-season Tournament at Georgia Tech
Golden Eagles conclude non-conference schedule this weekend
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball team travels to Atlanta, Ga., for its final in-season tournament when the Golden Eagles play in the Georgia Tech Invitational, Sept. 19-20, concluding their non-conference play.
Southern Miss opens with Alabama A&M on Friday at 3:30 p.m., and finished with Georgia at 9 a.m. and Georgia Tech at 6 p.m. on Saturday. All times are central.
The Golden Eagles are coming off a 3-1 victory over Southeastern Louisiana, improving to 10-4. The Eagles recorded double figure kills led by Stephany Purdue with 14 followed by Quinci Hayward with 11 and Jasmine Crowell with 10. Mary Pursell picked a season-high 33 digs.
Purdue leads a quartet of players with 3.12 kills per set while Hayward is next at 3.04 kills. Crowell and Lydia Bonner are averaging 2.54 and 2.26 kills per set, respectively. Mary Pursell is the team leader in digs with 3.85 followed by Alex Pfefferle with 3.21. Crowell also paces the team in blocks at 1.02 blocks per set. As a team, the Golden Eagles are averaging 13.71 kills, 1.29 aces, 15.42 digs and 1.98 blocks per set.
Alabama A&M enters the tournament with a 3-9 record. The Bulldogs are led by Kyanna Sales and Ashundra with 2.57 and 2.28 per average, respectively. Megan Butler and Sales have collected 100 digs each. Butler also guides the offense with a 7.63 per set average. As a team, Alabama A&M is averaging 9.95 kills, 1.77 aces, 12.72 digs and 1.38 blocks.
Southern Miss leads the series against Alabama A&M 2-0. The teams played earlier in the season in the Southern Miss Invitational where the Golden Eagles defeated the Bulldogs 3-0.
Georgia is 5-4 on the season. Lauren Teknipp leads the team in kills with 3.00 kills per set while Amanda Dachs is next at 2.44 kills per set. Tirah Le'au and Gabby Smiley are averaging 3.24 and 3.62 digs per set. Kaylee Kehoe guides the offense with 10.62 assists per set. As s team, the Bulldogs are averaging 12.78 kills, 1.34 aces, 13.38 digs and 2.88 blocks per set.
Georgia owns a 2-0 record against Southern Miss. The teams played last season in the Nebraska Tournament when the Bulldogs defeated the Golden Eagles 3-0.
Georgia Tech brings a 4-5 record into the tournament. Teegan Van Gunst leads the team with 3.59 kills per set. Courtney Felinski and Annika Van Gunst are next at 2.86 and 2.69 kills per set, respectively. Rebecca Martin is averaging 9.12 assists per set in guide the Yellow Jackets' offense. London Ackermann leads the team in digs with 4.23 per set. As a team, Georgia Tech is averaging 12.69 kills, 13.84 digs and 2.42 blocks per set.
Georgia Tech leads the series against Southern Miss 2-0. The last time the two teams played was in 1989.
Southern Miss will play its 15th consecutive road match when the Golden Eagles travel to Ruston, La., to play Louisiana Tech in the Conference USA opener, Sept. 22.
