HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball continues its road swing, traveling to Natchitoches, La., for a mid-week matchup against Northwestern State on Tuesday. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
The Golden Eagles enter the match with a 9-2 record after winning the Big Daddy's Invitational over the weekend. Southern Miss averaged 15.23 kills per set with a .310 hitting clip, 14.34 assists per set, 1.23 aces per set, 12.54 digs per set and 2.38 blocks per set against teams in the tournament. Sophomore middle blocker Quinci Hayward leads the squad with 146 kills (4.29 kps), while junior setter Kristen Fleming posts 398 assists for an 11.71 aps average. Sophomore Mary Pursell leads the squad with 159 digs, averaging 4.68 dps. Fleming recorded a career-high 60 assists against McNeese while Pursell tallied a career-high 28 digs against ULM.
Northwestern State is currently 2-8 following 1-2 outing in the Baylor Invitational. Caiti O'Connell leads the Demons with 93 kills (2.91 kps) with Ashley Elrod right behind with 97 (2.72) while Keelie Arneson is tops in digs with 148 (4.63 dps). Natalie Jaeger and Emily Johnson direct the offense and have a combined 270 assists. As a team, NSU is averaging 10.94 kills on .116 hitting, 9.88 assists, 1.31 aces, 14.03 digs and 1.63 blocks.
Southern Miss leads the series with Northwestern State 11-3. The Demons won the last two contests including a 3-1 win in the Stephen F. Austin Tournament last season.
Southern Miss remains on the road with a trip to Oxford, Miss., to play in the Rebel Classic hosted by Ole Miss on Sept. 20-21.
