Volleyball Heads to ISTAP Collegiate Cup 2

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball team hits the road for its third tournament of the season when the Golden Eagles participate in the ISTAP Collegiate Cup 2 on Sept. 12-13, hosted by Alabama State.

Southern Miss will face Alabama on Friday at 1 p.m., followed by Southeast Missouri State at 7 p.m. The Golden Eagles will take on Towson on Saturday at 10:30 a.m., before concluding with Alabama State at 3:30 p.m.

Southern Miss is coming off a 3-0 sweep of UNO on Tuesday, improving to 7-2 overall. Jasmine Crowell notched 11 kills on 16 attempts for a .688 hitting clip and five blocks. The team finished with a .382 hitting clip.

Quinci Hayward leads the Golden Eagles offensively with 3.33 kills per set followed closely by Stephany Purdue at 3.23. Jasmine Crowell adds 2.27 kills per set and is the top blocker at 1.23 blocks per set. Alex Pfefferle and Mary Pursell patrols the back row defensively, picking up 3.87 and 3.14 digs per set, respectively. Kristen Fleming and Makareta Rademakers guide the offense with a combined 12.42 assists per set. As a team, Southern Miss is averaging 13.70 kills, 1.50 aces, 15.90 digs and 2.23 team blocks.

Alabama enters the tournament with a 5-2 record. Krystal Rivers leads the Crimson Tide with 4.21 kills per set with Kat Hutson next at 3.21. Sierra Wilson guides the offense with 11.10 assists per set. Kryssi Daniels and Brittany Thomas lead the team in digs with 2.79 and 2.66 per set averages, respectively. As a team, Alabama is averaging 13.00 kills, 1.79 aces, 13.41 digs and 2.64 team blocks.

The series is tied at 8-8. Last time the two teams played was Sept. 28, 2004 in Hattiesburg. The Tide won in three.

Southeast Missouri State enters the weekend with a 1-6 record. Andrea Baylin leads the Redhawks offensively with 3.04 kills per set. Jade Mortimer leads the team in digs with a 3.96 per set average with Baylin right behind at 3.54. Katarina Rotta guides the offense with 7.65 assists per set. As a team, the Redhawks are averaging 11.65 kills, 1.04 aces, 14.62 digs and 1.62 team blocks.

This is the first meeting between the two schools.

Towson carries a 6-0 record into the tournament. Saitaua Iosia is the top kill-leader with 4.63 kills per set with a .412 hitting clip. Haley Pa'akaula is next at 3.16 kills per set. Aimee Schubert guides the offense and hands out 7.00 assists per set. Paige Sekerak is averaging 3.00 digs per set to lead the team. As a team, Towson is averaging 14.00 kills on .333 hitting, 2.11 aces, 15.37 digs and 2.47 team blocks.

This is the first meeting between the two teams.

Alabama owns a 2-5 record heading into the weekend. Myla Marshall leads the team in kills with a 2.36 per set average on a .313 hitting clip. Scout Wosang is tops in digs at 2.63 per set while Jamie Coleman is next at 2.18. As a team, the Hornets are averaging 9.88 kills, 1.64 aces, 12.08 digs and 1.48 team blocks.

Southern Miss leads the series against Alabama State 3-0. The last time the two teams played was in 2007 when the Golden Eagles defeated Hornets 3-0.

Following the tournament, Southern Miss travels to Southeastern Louisiana on Sept. 16 for a 7 p.m. match.
