Golden Eagle Flyby with Shelby Russell

This week for the Golden Eagle Flyby with the Golden Eagle Volleyball team, we sat down with senior Shelby Russell. Russell is a history major from Niceville, Fla. Russell plays primarily at the defensive specialist position. During her career at Southern Miss, she has played in 70 matches and 217 sets. She has tallied 46 career aces and 350 digs.

Q: What brought you to Southern Miss?
SR: I came to Southern Miss for the beautiful campus and to play volleyball.

Q: What drives you as an athlete?
SR: I am driven by the feeling of winning and competing.

Q: How did you manage to get into your sport?
SR: I got into my sport in the sixth grade. I started playing for fun.

Q: What is the biggest difference between high school and collegiate athletics?
SR: The biggest difference between high school and collegiate athletics is that there is a higher intensity, the training is tougher, and it is more competitive.

Q: Do you have any fun plans outside of your season? ie. a vacation?
SR: I am planning to go on a cruise for spring break.

Q: Describe yourself in four words.
SR: I would describe myself as goofy, outgoing, caring, and emotional.
