Volleyball Team Readies For UNO

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball team is set to travel to UNO for a mid-week matchup against the Privateers. First serve is set for 7 p.m. in the HPC on the campus of UNO.

Southern Miss enters the contest with a 6-2 record following a second-place finish at the Sawyer Camillo Classic in Lafayette, La., last weekend.

Quinci Hayward leads the team offensively with 92 kills for a 3.41 per set average followed closely behind by Stephany Purdue (3.33 kps). Kristen Fleming and Makareta Rademakers direct the offense at a combined 12.55 assists per set, while Alex Pfefferle has a team-leading 3.96 digs per set average with Mary Pursell adding 3.16 digs per set. Jasmine Crowell leads the team with 32 total blocks (1.19 b/s). As a team, Southern Miss is averaging 13.78 kills per set while averaging 16.44 digs per set and 2.22 blocks per set.

Volleyball Rolls Past UNO 3-0
The Southern Miss volleyball team captured a three-game win over UNOI (25-12, 25-15, 25-19) Tuesday night in Reed Green Coliseum.


Scouting the Privateers
UNO currently sits at 4-2 on the season. As a team, UNO is hitting .190 with 12.09 kills per set, 2.05 aces per set, 13.32 digs per set and 1.41 blocks per set. The Privateers is led by a trio of three players. Cara Sander leads the group, averaging 3.80 kills per set. Closely behind are Mikay Sellers-Wiebe and Rondolyn Bryant at 2.10 kps and 2.00 kps, respectively. Sara Hammoutene runs the offense and is averaging 9.00 assists per set, while Celeste Ramirez paces the team with 3.32 digs per set.

The Series: Southern Miss vs. UNO
UNO leads the series against the Golden Eagles 22-8. The two squads first met on Sept. 21, 1979 in New Orleans with the Privateers winning 3-0. Last season, Southern Miss won the only meeting in Hattiesburg in a three-set victory.

What's Next?
Southern Miss travels to Montgomery, Ala., for its third tournament of the season when the Golden Eagles participate in the ISTAP Collegiate Cup 2 hosted by Alabama State, Sept. 12-13. Southern Miss opens against Alabama on Friday at 1 p.m., followed by Southeast Missouri State at 7 p.m. The Golden Eagles close out the tournament on Saturday against Towson at 10:30 a.m. and conclude with Alabama State at 3:30 p.m.
