HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball team (3-1) travels to Lincoln, Neb., to play in its second tournament of the season on Sept. 6-7 when the Golden Eagles face Georgia and Villanova in the Nebraska Tournament.
On Friday, the Golden Eagles will square off at 4:30 p.m., against Georgia before facing Villanova at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
Southern Miss enters the weekend with a 3-1 record after defeating UNO 3-0 on Tuesday night.
Quinci Hayward leads the Golden Eagles offensively, averaging 3.58 kills per set while Jasmine Crowell is next at 2.75 kills per set. Kristen Fleming guides the offense after averaging 10.92 assists per set. Mary Pursell has stepped into the Libero position and leads the team in digs with a 5.08 per set average while Crowell leads the team blocks with 1.33 blocks per set.
As a team, USM is averaging 13.50 kills, 16.08 digs and 2.50 team blocks per set.
Southern Miss has several players ranking in the top 25 among Conference USA leaders in statistical categories. Middle Blocker Jasmine Crowell ranks among the leaders in hitting percentage, kills, blocks and points. Sophomore outside hitter Quinci Hayward ranks among the leaders in hitting percentage, kills and points while freshman redshirt freshman Shelby Russell ranks among the leaders service aces and sophomore Mary Pursell ranks second in digs per set. Sophomore Kristen Fleming ranks third among the leaders in assists per set.
A Look at Georgia
Georgia enters the weekend with a 3-0 record overall. As a team, the Bulldogs are averaging 14.44 kills per set on .320 hitting. Georgia averages 16.00 digs and 2.78 team blocks per set. The Bulldogs use a balanced offensive attack as five players have recorded 20 or more kills with Lauren Teknipp leading the quintet at 2.89 kills per set while Kaylee Eatmon and Maggie Baumert guide the team with 6.67 and 5.11 assists per set, respectively. Allison Summers is the defensively leader with 3.78 digs per set.
Series Record against the Bulldogs
Southern Miss and Memphis have only once in the series with Georgia owning a 1-0 lead. Oct. 15, 1989 marks the only meeting between the two teams.
A Look at Villanova
Villanova enters the weekend with 1-2 record. As a team, Villanova is averaging 12.77 kills on .196 hitting, 16.00 digs per set and 1.62 team blocks per set. Lauren Carpenter leads the team, averaging 4.0 kills per set with Claire Crutchfield at 2.46 and Michaela Berendt at 2.15. Emma Pettit runs the offense and is averaging a combined 11.15 assists per set, while Mariah Henley paces the team with 5.54 digs per set.
Series Record against the Wildcats
This will be the first meeting between the two teams.
Following the Nebraska Tournament, Southern Miss returns home to host Southeastern Louisiana in a mid-week matchup on Sept. 10 at 7 p.m.
