Volleyball Eagles Travel to Bama Bash
Golden Eagles will play a pair of matches on Friday and Saturday
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- After a successful opening week, the Southern Miss volleyball team set for a challenging trip to the Bama Bash Volleyball Tournament, Sept. 4-5.
The Golden Eagles (4-0) will take on College of Charleston (1-2) on Friday at 10 a.m. and Northwestern State (2-2) at 5 p.m. The Black and Gold continues play, facing host Alabama (1-2) at 9 a.m. and conclude with Tulsa (1-2) at 2 p.m.
SCOUTING SOUTHERN MISS
Southern Miss is coming off a 3-1 victory over Southeastern Louisiana Tuesday night. The Golden Eagles got standout performances from junior Stephany Purdue and freshman Kylie Grandy. Both Eagles recorded double-doubles as Purdue led the way with a match-high 25 kills and 11 digs while Grandy added 12 kills and 17 digs. Mary Pursell collected 29 digs while Sarah Bell handed out 43 assists and had 10 digs. Elise Ames registered five total blocks.
Purdue leads the team offensively with a 5.13 kills per set average as Bell guides the offense with a 9.64 assist per set average. Pursell leads the team defensively on the back to the tune of 4.20 digs per set while Ames is the top blocker with a 1.69 per set average. Grandy also leads the team in 10 aces.
A LOOK AT THE TOURNAMENT FIELD
College of Charleston enters the weekend with a 1-2 record. Melissa Morello leads the team offensively with a 3.91 kill average on a .270 hitting clip. Allison Beckman and Mackenzie Cooler guide the offense with 5.60 and 6.40 assists per set. Britney Vallez is tops on the team in digs with 4.18 digs per set. As a team, the Cougars are averaging 12.45 kills on .173 hitting, 14.64 digs and 2.59 team blocks.
Northwestern State owns a 2-2 record. Lauren Agan leads the team with 2.50 kills per set. Natalie Jaeger and Kathryn Wristen share setting duties for the Lady Demons. Bailey Martin leads the team in digs with 3.31 per set. As a team, the Lady Demons are averaging 10.31 kills on a .210 hitting clip, 11.31 digs and 1.56 team blocks.
Alabama enters the weekend with a 1-2 record. A trio of Crimson Tide players are averaging over 3.00 kills per set, led by Brittany Thomas at 3.46. Sierra Wilson guides the offense with 11.6 assists per set. Natalie Murison leads the team in digs with 4.15 per set. As a team, the Tide is averaging 13.3 kills per set on .158 hitting, 14.92 digs and 2.19 team blocks.
Tulsa owns a 1-2 record. Erica Bohannon is putting down 3.90 kills per set while Brooke Berryhill is picking up 4.00 digs per set on the back row. Sophie Bethke guides the offense with 9.30 assists per set. As a team, the Golden Hurricane is averaging 11.30 kills on .154 hitting, 13.70 digs and 1.90 team blocks.
