Golden Eagle Flyby with Rachel Johnson

In this week of Golden Eagle Flyby, we sat down with senior volleyball player, Rachel Johnson. The Round Rock, Texas, native plays middle blocker for the Golden Eagles. She is off to a great start after helping Southern Miss win its opening weekend tournament. For her efforts, she was named to the all-tournament team. Johnson is currently third on the team in kills and leads the team with a .426 hitting clip.

Q: What was your first thought as you walked onto campus for the first time?
RJ: When I first walked onto campus, the first thought that came into my mind was that everybody that comes to Southern must instantly fall in love with it.

Q: Describe your hometown.
RJ: I am from a city called Round Rock, Texas that is in the suburbs of Austin, Texas. Austin just so happens to be the best city on the Earth.

Q: What is your favorite home cooked meal?
RJ: My favorite home cooked meal is manicotti.

Q: What drives you as an athlete?
RJ: Making my family proud drives me as an athlete.

Q: Favorite thing to do outside of athletics? Movie? Book? TV Show? Artist?
RJ: I love listening to music. I also love watching TV. My favorite television shows are Power, Empire, Scandal, and How to Get Away with Murder.

Q: Who would be your top three people you could have dinner with?
RJ: The top three people that I could have dinner with would be Beyoncé, Martin Luther King Jr., and Maya Angelo.

Q: If you could choose a super power, what would it be? Why?
RJ: If I had to choose a super power, it would be to read minds, because it is so annoying to guess what people are thinking or trying to say.
