HATTIESBSURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball team held its annual Black and Gold scrimmage and the Black Team defeating the Gold Team 3-1.
"We saw a lot of positive things today," head coach Amanda Berley said. "I thought we got solid play out of our hitters in Quinci Hayward, Jasmine Crowell, Stephany Purdue and Elise Ames. Kristen (Fleming) did a nice job of mixing the offense."
Six players tallied double digit kills led by junior Jasmine Crowell and sophomore Quinci Hayward with 12 kills apiece. Sophomore Elise Ames had 11 while freshman Stephany Purdue and sophomore Katie Steelman added 10 kills each. Mary Pursell totaled 18 digs and Alex Pfefferle chipped in 12. Junior setter Kristen Fleming tallied 43 assists and freshman Makareta Rademakers had 28.
"We have several players who showed a lot of improvements over last season," Berkley said. "Now we have to focus on improving several aspects of our game with blocking and become more consistent with our passing."
The Golden Eagles open the season hosting their own tournament with the Southern Miss Invitational that includes Jackson State, Stephen F. Austin and Troy. Tournament play begins on Friday at 3 p.m. with Troy taking on Stephen F. Austin followed by Southern Miss and Jackson State at 7 p.m. Action resumes on Saturday with a 9 a.m. match with Jackson State against Stephen F. Austin followed by Southern Miss versus Troy at 11 a.m., Troy versus Jackson State at 1:30 p.m. and concludes with Southern Miss against Stephen F. Austin at 3:30 p.m.
