Volleyball to Hold Sneak Preview with Black and Gold Scrimmage Saturday
Team to offer free clinic for grades kindergarten through eighth.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Golden Eagle volleyball fans can get an early preview of the 2013 volleyball team on Saturday, Aug. 24, when the team hosts its annual Black and Gold scrimmage at 3:30 p.m., in Reed Green Coliseum. Admission is free to the public.
In conjunction with the scrimmage, the volleyball team will host a free clinic from 1:30 p.m., for students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade.
Head Coach Amanda Berkley, her staff and players will be on hand to give instructions in all aspects of the game. Participants should bring tennis shoes and knee pads.
Southern Miss returns 11 letterwinners from last year's team that finished with an 8-20 record and 4-12 in league play. The Golden Eagles were picked to finish 10th in the league standings for 2013.
Heading the list are juniors Jasmine Crowell (6-0, OH, Gulf Breeze, Fla.), and Alex Pfefferle (5-5, Libero, New Orleans, La.). Also returning is senior Shelby Schacher (5-10, OH, Lone Tree, Colo.), two juniors Kristen Fleming (5-9, S, Columbus, Ga.) and Katie Steelman (5-11, OH, Panama City Beach, Fla.), eight sophomores Elise Ames (6-1, OH, Wildwood, Mo.), Lydia Bonner (5-11, OH, Houston, Texas), Mary Hannah Farnell (5-9, L/DS, Mobile, Ala.), Taylor Gibson (5-7, S/DS, Guntersville, Ala.), Quinci Howard (6-5, MB, Slidell, La.), Rachel Johnson (6-0, MB, Round Rock, Texas), Mary Pursell (5-6, L/DS, Kenner, La.) and Shelby Russell (5-9, L/DS, Niceville, Fla.). Berkley added three newcomers in Stephany Purdue (5-11, OH, Mesa, Ariz.), Chanel Joyce (5-10, OH, San Mateo, Calif.) and Markareta Rademakers (5-8, S, Christchurch, New Zealand).
Southern Miss opens the campaign by hosting Jackson State, Stephen F. Austin and Troy in the Southern Miss Invitational, Aug. 30-31. The tournament play begins on Friday with Troy and Stephen F. Austin at 3 p.m., followed by the Golden Eagles against Jackson State at 7 p.m. Saturday's action begins at 9 a.m. with Jackson State and Stephen F. Austin, followed by Southern Miss and Troy at 11 a.m., Troy and Jackson State at 1:30 p.m., and concludes with Southern Miss and Stephen F. Austin at 3:30 p.m.
