HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball team had its annual Black and Gold scrimmage and the Black team defeated the Gold team, 4-1.
Senior Halie Ecker led the Black team with a match-high 25 kills followed by freshman Lydia Bonner with 17 and sophomore Jasmine Crowell added 13 kills. Ecker also led the team with 15 digs while senior Elizabeth Rinaduo had 13 and sophomore Alex Pfefferle chipped in 12. Sophomore Kristen Fleming registered 39 assists for the Black team and 28 assists for the Black team. Crowell also had had six blocks.
"We saw a lot of good things in our scrimmage," third-year coach Abbey Sutherland said. "We are going to be very young this year with only three players with substantial playing time. We are continuing to learn and make strides with each practice."
Sophomore Emily Sears led the Gold Team with 17 kills while freshman Rachel Johnson had 12 and sophomore Katie Steelman and freshman Heidi Otto chipped 11 kills each. Freshman Mary Pursell led the way with 13 digs. Taylor Gibson collected 28 assists for the Gold Team and 28 assists for the Black Team.
"We lost a lot of experience with our graduating class, but I believe we have the talent to fill most of those shoes," Sutherland said. "We will have to take one match at a time and build on each one to get ready for our conference schedule."
Southern Miss opens hosting its own tournament, Aug. 24-25, in Reed Green Coliseum. Action gets underway on Friday at 11 a.m. with South Alabama taking on Central Arkansas followed by Central Arkansas and Louisiana Tech at 3 p.m. Southern Miss and South Alabama will squad off at 7 p.m. in wrapping up the first day of action.
Saturday's play begins at 11 a.m. with Southern Miss against Central Arkansas followed by South Alabama versus Louisiana Tech at 3 p.m., and the Golden Eagles will conclude the tournament against Louisiana Tech at 7 p.m.
