Volleyball Set For Fan Day Saturday

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Golden Eagle volleyball fans can get an early preview of the 2015 volleyball team on Saturday, Aug. 22, when the team hosts its annual Black and Gold scrimmage at 2:30 p.m., in Reed Green Coliseum. Admission is free to the public.

In conjunction with the scrimmage, the volleyball team will host a free clinic from 1 to 2 p.m., for kids 12 and under. Following the scrimmage, there will be a poster signing. Kids who attend the clinic will also receive a free ticket to the first match on Aug. 28 when the Golden Eagles take Mercer in the opening match of the Southern Miss Invitational.

Head Coach Amanda Berkley begins her third season at the helm and will be on hand as well as her staff and players to give instructions in all aspects of the game. Participants should bring tennis shoes and knee pads.

Southern Miss returns 11 letterwinners from last year's team that finished with a 20-14 record and 9-7 in league play. The Golden Eagles were picked to finish sixth in the league standings for 2015.

Heading the list are seniors Elise Ames (6-1, OH, Wildwood, Mo.), Lydia Bonner (5-11, OH, Houston, Texas), Quinci Howard (6-5, OH, New Orleans, La.), Rachel Johnson (6-0, MB, Round Rock, Texas), Mary Pursell (5-6, L/DS, Kenner, La.) and Shelby Russell (5-9, DS/L, Niceville, Fla.). Also returning are junior Stephany Purdue (5-11, OH, Mesa, Ariz.), Chanel Joyce (5-10, OH, San Mateo, Calif.) and Markareta Rademakers (5-8, S, Christchurch, New Zealand), sophomores Kelsey Champbers (6-0, RS, Rosharon, Texas) and Natalie Druhan (DS/L, 5-8, Mobile, Ala.). Berkley added five newcomers to the 2015 roster in freshmen Dani Ajayi (6-0, MB, Fayetteville, Ga.), Sarah Bell (5-10, Setter, San Antonio, Texas), Alexis Coombs (6-1, OH, Leesburg, Va.), Kylie Grandy (5-11, OH, Rolesville, N.C.) and Katherine Still (5-7, DS/L, Mobile, Ala.)

Southern Miss opens the campaign hosting Mercer, Nicholls and Southern in the Southern Miss Invitational, Aug. 28-29. The tournament play begins on Friday with Nicholls and Southern at 5 p.m., followed by the Golden Eagles against Mercer at 7:30 p.m. Saturday's action begins at 10 a.m. with Nicholls and Mercer, followed by Southern Miss and Southern at 12:30 p.m., Southern and Mercer at 3:30 p.m., and concludes with Southern Miss and Nicholls at 6 p.m.
