HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Golden Eagle volleyball fans can get an early preview of the 2012 volleyball team on Saturday, Aug. 18, when the team hosts a Black and Gold scrimmage at 2 p.m., in Reed Green Coliseum. Admission is free to the public.
In conjunction with the scrimmage, the volleyball team will host a free clinic from 12-1 p.m., for students in grades eighth grade and below.
Head Coach Abbey Sutherland, her staff and players will be on hand to give instructions in all aspects of the game. Participants should bring tennis shoes and knee pads.

Southern Miss returns eight letterwinners from last year's team that finished in a tie for sixth fourth during the regular season with a 17-15 record overall and 11-9 in league play.
Heading the list are seniors Halie Ecker (5-10, OH, Moline, Ill.), and Elizabeth Rinaudo (5-8, UTL, Mandeville, La.). Also returning is junior Shelby Schacher (5-10, OH, Lone Tree, Colo.), five sophomores Jasmine Crowell (6-0, OH/MB, Gulf Breeze, Fla.), Kristen Fleming (5-9, S, Columbus, Ga.), Alex Pfefferle (5-5, L, New Orleans, La.), Emily Sears (5-11, OH, Ashburn, Va.), and Katie Steelman (5-11, OH, Panama City Beach, Fla.). Sutherland added nine newcomers, Elise Ames (6-1, OH, Wildwood, Mo.), Lydia Bonner (5-11, OH, Houston, Texas), Mary Hannah Farnell (5-9, L/DS, Mobile, Ala.), Taylor Gibson (5-7, S/DS, Guntersville, Ala.), Quinci Howard (6-5, MB, Slidell, La.), Rachel Johnson (6-0, MB, Round Rock, Texas), Heidi Otto (6-1, OH, Spring, Texas), Mary Pursell (5-6, L/DS, Kenner, La.), Shelby Russell (5-9, L/DS, Niceville, Fla.)
Southern Miss opens the campaign by hosting Central Arkansas, Louisiana Tech and South Alabama in the Southern Miss Invitational, Aug. 24-25. The tournament play begins on Friday with South Alabama and Central Arkansas at 11 a.m., followed by Central Arkansas and Louisiana Tech at 3 p.m., and the Golden Eagles against South Alabama at 7 p.m. Saturday's action begins at 11 a.m. with Southern Miss and Central Arkansas, followed by South Alabama and Louisiana at 3 p.m., and concludes with Southern Miss and Louisiana Tech at 7 p.m.
