Bell, Repsher receive C-USA preseason honors; team picked fourth
IRVING, Texas -- Wednesday marked another sign that volleyball season is around the corner, as Southern Miss standouts Sarah Bell and Catherine Repsher picked up more accolades, this time landing spots on the preseason all-Conference USA team.
The Golden Eagles were also picked fourth in the team preseason poll. The squad finished second last season, continuing the pattern that the team improved its standing in each of Amanda Berkley's first four years as the head coach.
Bell, a junior out of San Antonio, boasts a 4.0 GPA and is majoring in biological sciences. She is currently No. 10 nationally with 11.43 assists per set. She has moved up to No. 7 on the Southern Miss career-assists record book with 2,637 in her two years. The San Antonio native has seven 50-plus assists outings this year with 15 in her tenure. Bell is also a past President's List member and Academic All-C-USA honoree.
Repsher, from Carl Junction, Mo., was not only Southern Miss' first-ever Freshman of the Year, but also a four-time C-USA Freshman of the Week (most in award's history). She came on real strong in her first college athletics adventure, posting career-highs of 14 kills in her first (McNeese State) and third (Tulane) matches while doing the same against No. 25 Kansas State. That McNeese match also saw Repsher amass a personal-best 10 total blocks in the four sets. She finished the regular season No. 3 in league play with 1.12 blocks per set.
Repsher was also the epitome of efficiency, producing a .400 hitting percentage of better in 10 matches. She was the fifth All-Freshman recipient in Berkley's tenure.
This comes off what was a packed award shelf for Southern Miss. Repsher and Bell were two of a program-record five All-Conference selections, and the AVCA was equally rewarding. Berkley and Repsher were named the Southwest Region Coach and Freshman of the Year, respectively, while Bell placed on the team as well.
Southern Miss will begin its season Friday, Aug. 25 at 2 p.m. against Nicholls in Reed Green Coliseum. It is part of the 10th-annual Southern Miss Invitational, and this year's tournament field also includes Miami (Fla.), Jackson State and Little Rock. There will also be a free kids' clinic and black and gold intersquad scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 19, with more details to come.
