HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss volleyball program has announced its 2016 schedule.
The Golden Eagles have improved their win total each year since 2012, including a 24-11 record in 2015. Head coach Amanda Berkley also oversaw a 20-win season in 2014, the first since 2009.
The squad begins the year with the ninth annual Southern Miss Invitational (Aug. 26-27), a tournament that has also kicked off the season from 2010 and onward. McNeese State, Grambling State and Tulane will all venture to Reed Green Coliseum that weekend.
Three days later, Southern University arrives for an Aug. 30 tilt at 6:30 p.m.
Southern Miss' second tournament will be in Baton Rouge, La., for the LSU Invitational (Sept. 2-3). Virginia and UConn will be the first two opponents, followed by the host Tigers on the second day. It would mark the two teams' first head-to-head battle since 2000.
The following week features four matches in Alabama. Southern Miss makes the short trip to Mobile on Sept. 6 to face USA at 6 p.m., then competes in the Crimson Tide Invitational (Sept. 9-10). Lehigh, Alabama and Northwestern State make up the field. The Golden Eagles swept their four-match slate at the Bama Bash in 2015, going to a fifth set only once.
Southern Miss faces ULM in a Tuesday, Sept. 13 contest at 6:30 p.m. prior to concluding the non-conference schedule at the Lady Razorback Invitational (Sept. 16-17). UMKC and Kansas State join host Arkansas as Golden Eagle opponents.
The Conference USA round begins with matches in Denton, Texas, and San Antonio to face North Texas (Sept. 23) and UTSA (Sept. 25), respectively.
The C-USA home opener is set for Sept. 30 against Marshall at 6 p.m., and the Golden Eagles will host four straight matches from Oct. 28-Nov. 6, the last of which being Senior Day against Rice at noon.
