HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss volleyball head coach Amanda Berkley announced the release of the 2014 schedule that will feature four in-season tournaments, 11 home matches in addition to hosting the 2014 Conference USA Championship.
"With our non-conference schedule, our goal was to get our team ready to play for the tough conference schedule with some competitive teams," Berkley said. "One exciting aspect of our schedule is that we are hosting the Conference USA tournament for the first time since becoming a member of Conference USA. We are excited to be playing at home for the chance to make it to the NCAA Tournament."
Southern Miss opens the 2014 campaign by hosting Arkansas Pine Bluff, Alabama State and Nicholls State in the Southern Miss Invitational, Aug. 29-30, before traveling to Troy for a match on Sept. 1. The Golden Eagles then travel to Lafayette, La., for the Bon Temps Invitational, Sept. 5-6, which includes Northwestern State, Southern University, Louisiana and McNeese and then play at UNO on Sept. 9.
Southern Miss also will play in the Alabama State Tournament, Sept. 12-13, with teams Alabama, Southeast Missouri State, Towson and Alabama State, then, travel to Southeastern Louisiana on Sept. 16 before playing in its final in-season tournament at the Georgia Tech Tournament, Sept. 19-20, that include teams Alabama A&M, Georgia and Georgia Tech.
The league will return to the 16-match format, playing in one division with Charlotte, FIU, Florida Atlantic, Louisiana Tech, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, Rice, Southern Miss, UAB, UTEP, UTSA and Western Kentucky. The top eight teams will qualify for the C-USA postseason tournament.
Southern Miss opens C-USA play on the road against Louisiana Tech (Sept. 22) before returning home to host Rice (Sept. 26). The Black and Gold travels to Middle Tennessee (Sept. 28) and after playing 16 of 17 matches on the road, the Eagles return to Reed Green Coliseum to host Charlotte (Oct. 3), North Texas (Oct. 10) and Marshall (Oct. 12). Southern Miss plays at Florida Atlantic (Oct. 17) and at FIU (Oct. 19).
The Golden Eagles return home to host UAB (Oct. 24) and Louisiana Tech (Oct. 26) before hitting the road for a pair of matches at UTEP (Oct. 31) and the reigning C-USA champion UTSA (11/2). Southern Miss then hosts Western Kentucky (Nov. 7) and Florida Atlantic (Nov. 9), then, concludes the road portion and regular season at UAB (Nov. 14) and at Charlotte (Nov. 16).
Southern Miss hosts the Conference USA Championship (Nov. 21-23) for the first time. This is the first conference volleyball tournament that the Golden Eagles will host since 1985.
