CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Behind 10 kills on .500 hitting by sophomore middle blocker Elise Ames, Southern Miss volleyball team swept Charlotte (25-18, 25-12, 25-14) Friday in Conference USA action.
In addition to Ames' numbers, sophomores outside hitters Quinci Hayward and Lydia Bonner posted eight and seven kills, respectively. As a team, Southern Miss hit .309.
Senior setter Kristen Fleming dished out 30 assists and added three kills and seven digs while sophomore Libero Mary Pursell led the Eagle defense with 20 digs.
Southern Miss (15-13, 6-7) recorded 8.0 team blocks to Charlotte's 4.0. Stephany Purdue, Jasmine Crowell and Ames notched three stuffs apiece.
Charlotte ran out to an 8-3 lead to start first set. Following a Southern Miss timeout, Charlotte added an ace before Ames put down three straight kills in kick starting an 11-4 run in taking a 14-13 lead. The 49ers knotted the score at 14-14 after a timeout, but Southern Miss scored seven of the next nine points to push the lead to 21-17. The Eagles ended the set with a 4-1 run for the 25-18 win.
Southern Miss scored 11 of the first 14 points as the Eagles ran out to an 11-3 lead. Charlotte then scored three straight points to cut the lead to 11-6. Southern Miss regrouped and finished the set with a 14-6 run for the 25-12 win.
Southern Miss started out the third set on fire, going up 7-1. The Eagles pushed the lead to 16-3 before the 49ers called a timeout. Charlotte could not overcome the lead as Southern Miss completed the sweep with a 25-14 win.
Carly Oschs led Charlotte with eight kills while Claire Kreuz added seven. Michelle Hovey picked up 17 digs.
Southern Miss will close out the regular season on Sunday at 12 p.m. (CT) at Florida Atlantic.
