Volleyball Eagles Fall at UAB in Five

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Southern Miss had four players record double-digit kills but it wasn't enough as UAB defeated the Golden Eagles in five sets, 3-2, by the scores of 27-25, 19-25, 25-22, 18-25, 15-12.

Southern Miss falls to 20-12 overall and 9-6 in Conference USA while UAB improved to 8-23 and 4-11.

Jasmine Crowell led the way with 18 kills while Elise Ames added 14 kills. Stephany Purdue and Quinci Hayward added 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Mary Pursell picked up 24 digs and Shelby Russell had 13. Kristen Fleming recorded a double-double with 54 assists and 10 digs.

Southern Miss finished with 63 kills on a .187 hitting clip, two aces, 70 digs and 12.0 team blocks

Both team battled back and forth in the first set. UAB rallied from a 21-17 deficit late in taking a 27-25 win.

Southern Miss ran out to an 8-3 lead to start the second set and kept the momentum down the stretch in winning the second set 25-19.

UAB used an 8-3 run midway through the set to take a 16-11 lead. Southern Miss cut the lead to 17-16, but UAB was able to hold on for the 25-22 win.

The Golden Eagles led from start to finish as Southern Miss hit .326 while holding the Blazers to .174 in taking the fourth set 25-18 to force a fifth set.

UAB took an early 5-1 lead before Southern Miss battled back to tie the set at 8-8. UAB then scored five of the next seven points to keep a three-point advantage at 13-10. UAB held on for the 15-12 win.

Gabby Deshotel led the Blazers with 19 kills while Bethanie Thomas had 14 kills to go with 12 digs, Kiriana Hirini added 11 and Sara Rishell had 10. Emma Short had 25 digs. Gabbi Moreno had 47 assists.

Southern Miss wraps up the regular season at Charlotte with first serve set for 1 p.m.
