HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball team concluded the regular season with a 3-1 loss to UAB on Sunday by the scores of 14-25, 15-25, 25-23, 20-25.
Jasmine Crowell led Southern Miss with a team-best 15 kills on .270 hitting to go with six total blocks. Senior Halie Ecker added nine kills and 11 digs. Elizabeth Rinaudo tallied a match-tying 25 digs followed by Alex Pfefferle with 11.
The Golden Eagle team finished with 44 kills, 70 digs and 8.0 team blocks.
The teams opened the first set battling back and forth until UAB used a 6-0 run to push its lead to 12-4. The Blazers recorded 16 kills on 484 hitting while holding USM to nine kills on .053 hitting. UAB took the first set, 25-14.
UAB took its momentum into the second set as the Blazers ran out to a 15-4 lead and never looked back. The Blazers' defense limited the Eagles' hitting to just .026 with nine kills on their way to a 25-15 win.
The teams battled early to start the third set. With the set tied at 11-11, USM went on a 4-0 run to push ahead 15-11. The Golden Eagles was able to keep the Blazers at bay forcing UAB to take a timeout with USM leading 19-14. Southern Miss added a point out of the time, but a UAB kill and four consecutive hitting errors from the Golden Eagles had UAB trailing, 20-19. Out of the Southern Miss timeout, the Golden Eagles got a pair of kills from freshmen Lydia Bonner and Quinci Hayward for the 22-19 lead before UAB added a one on a block to get the score to 22-20. Southern Miss pushed its lead to 24-20 on a block and kill. UAB then fought off three set points before Ecker finally put down the kill for the 25-23 win.
UAB ran out to an 8-4 led to start the fourth set. After a Southern Miss timeout, the Eagles got a pair of kills to get the score to 8-6. The teams traded points before the Eagles were forced to burn another timeout trailing 13-9. UAB then scored four-straight points to extend its lead to 17-9. After taking a 24-17 lead, USM fought off three match points before the Blazers ended the set with a kill and a 25-20 win.
Sam Serley led a quartet of Blazers with 13 kills on .387 hitting and 10 total blocks followed by Kirsten Gallaher with 13 kills. Kate Morrell added 12 kills and 14 digs while Sam Skinner chipped in 12 kills. Rachel Fairbanks collected 25 digs and Bethany Stanford added 10 digs.
UAB finished with 56 kills on .232 hitting, 73 digs and 21.0 team blocks.
Southern Miss concluded its season with an 8-20 overall record and 4-12 in league play. The Golden Eagles did not qualify for the postseason C-USA Tournament as the top eight will play.
