Total Team Effort Keys Offense in Sweep of UAB
Purdue gets closer to school's all-time career record
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Stephany Purdue posted a match-high 13 kills to get within 10 of breaking the school's all-time career record, and Southern Miss clicked for a sweep of UAB (25-19, 25-15, 25-21) on Friday night.
Sarah Bell was also an amazing 8-for-8 on attacks, while Chanel Joyce and Catherine Repsher had nine and 10 kills with .353 and .438 hitting percentages, respectively.
The largest deficit of the night came as early as possible when UAB took a 7-3 lead in the first set. The Golden Eagles fought back in a big way, scoring seven straight points that put them up 13-9. Purdue began it with a kill and Kylie Grandy, one of the league's top servers, registered back-to-back aces. Kills by Alexis Coombs and Bell forced a Blazer timeout, trailing 12-9.
Southern Miss (19-7, 8-3 C-USA) opened up a 7-3 lead of its own in the second set, but a service error and two Blazer kills made it a 13-12 UAB lead, and Southern Miss used its first timeout of the night. It would not last very long, however, as the Golden Eagles ended the set with an 11-1 run.
A Repsher kill opened the Golden Eagles' third-set lead to 8-3, and Southern Miss kept up the pressure until a UAB kill tied it at 18 and forced Southern Miss to call a timeout. Another kill by Bell and a Natalie Druhan service ace upped the lead to 20-18 to begin the end of the night.
Southern Miss' home finale is Sunday at noon against Rice. Seniors Purdue, Joyce and Makareta Rademakers will be honored beforehand.
-Southern Miss' .317 hitting percentage marked the fourth time in C-USA play this year it passed the .300-mark.
-Natalie Druhan's 14 digs were a match-high.
-Kylie Grandy's three service aces gives her nine for the past four matches.
-Chanel Joyce also had nine kills and a .353 clip.
