Volleyball Eagles Down Miners in Four
The Golden Eagles improved to 19-9 and 8-3 in C-USA while the UTEP fell to 4-18 and 2-9 in the league.
Stephany Purdue and Jasmine Crowell led the way with 13 kills apiece while Chanel Joyce added 11 kills. Kristen Fleming recorded a double-double with 44 assists and 11 digs. Mary Pursell notched 23 digs while Alex Pfefferle had 11.
Southern Miss finished with 55 kills on a .196 hitting clip to go with eight aces and 69 digs. UTEP finished with 42 kills, 60 digs and 9.0 team blocks.
The team battled to a 9-9 tie before Joyce's kill sparked an 8-0 run giving Southern Miss the 17-9 lead. The Black and Gold held on to the lead and finished strong in taking a 25-17 win.
The Miners ran out to a 7-1 lead and fought off each attempt by the Golden Eagles used to get back into the set. UTEP held the Eagles to a .029 hitting percentage in capturing a 25-17 win.
The third set started in the same fashion as the first with both teams battling early. Three consecutive Southern Miss points put the Golden Eagles up 13-10. The teams traded points over the next six points before the Miners used a 5-2 run to cut the lead to 19-18. UTEP added a pair of points in taking a 20-19 lead out of a Southern Miss timeout. An Elise Ames ignited a 4-0 run to give the visitors a 23-20 lead. Southern Miss ended the set with an ace and an UTEP error for the 25-20 win.
UTEP scored nine of the first 13 points in taking a 9-4 lead. The Golden Eagles then put together a 12-2 run that put Southern Miss in front 16-11. The Miners came right back to cut the lead to 16-14, forcing Southern Miss to take a timeout. The Miners added another two points in cutting the lead to one (17-16) before the Golden Eagles finished with an 8-5 run for the 25-21 win.
Dalainee Perry led the Miners with 12 kills and Krystal Ejesieme had 11. Ashley Peak picked up 19 digs.
Southern Miss concludes its home portion of its schedule with visits from Western Kentucky on Friday and Florida Atlantic on Sunday. The contest with the Hilltoppers is scheduled for a 7 p.m., first serve and Sunday's match start is slated for 12 p.m.
