DENTON, Texas -- The Southern Miss volleyball team lost to North Texas in three straight 25-22, 25-21, 25-23 in Conference USA action Friday night, falling to 21-9 on the season and 8-5 in league play.
Southern Miss got off to a quick start scoring five of the first six points. The Golden Eagles led 12-8 before North Texas (16-11, 8-4) gain the momentum in scoring four of five points to cut the lead to 13-12. The Mean Green continued their momentum, taking a 20-17 lead after using an 8-5 run. North Texas was able to finish strong in winning the first set 25-22.
The teams battled back and forth to start the second set. After a 5-5 tie, North Texas outscored Southern Miss 6-2 for an 11-7 lead. The Golden Eagles fought back to tie the set six tie times before the Mean Green scored three straight in taking the lead for good. North Texas took a 2-0 lead with a 25-21 win.
North Texas took an early 4-1 lead before Southern Miss battled back, scoring three consecutive to tie the set. The teams went back and forth until the Mean Green used a 5-1 run for an 11-7 lead. After gaining the momentum, North Texas pushed the lead to 18-12. However, Southern Miss battled back, scoring eight of the next nine point for a 20-19 lead. Out of a timeout, North Texas regained the momentum and finished with a 25-23 win.
Carnae Dillard finished with 18 kills and 17 digs for the Mean Green. Amy Henard picked up 14 digs while Alex Janak had 22 assists and 11 digs.
Southern Miss is back on the road with a visit to Marshall on Nov. 6.
