Volleyball Eagles Sweep UAB
Golden Eagles improve to 21-7 overall and 8-3 in league play
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Junior outside hitter Stephany Purdue recorded a double-double with 15 kills and 12 digs as the Southern Miss volleyball team swept UAB 25-18, 25-22, 25-13 in Conference USA action Sunday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles improved to 21-7 and 8-3 in league play while UAB dropped to 8-18 and 0-11.
"Overall it was a really good team win," Head Coach Amanda Berkley said. "Offensively, we had one of our better matches of the season. Both outsides had great offensive matches. Rachel Johnson was very effective on the side. Mary Pursell did well on the defense coming up with 21 digs in a three-set match, that pretty good."
Pursell paced the team defensively with 21 digs while Kylie Grandy added 15 digs to go with nine kills on a .346 hitting clip. Rachel Johnson also tallied eight kills on .471 hitting. Sarah Bell finished with 35 assists.
The team finished with 44 kills on a .311 hitting clip, four aces, 66 digs and 6.0 team blocks. UAB had 33 kills on .121 hitting, seven aces and 57 digs.
UAB scored the first three points to start the behind a Southern Miss hitting error and back-to-back aces. Southern Miss battled back using an 8-2 run to take an 8-5 lead. The home team did not trail again for the remainder of the set. The Golden Eagles led 14-8 before UAB rallied to cut the lead to 15-12. Out of a timeout, Southern Miss answered with four straight points behind a pair of kills and two aces in running the score to 19-12. Southern Miss took the first set 25-18.
Southern Miss scored the first two points to start the second set, but UAB answered with a 7-2 run to take the lead. UAB scored six of the next 11 points to push the lead to 13-9. Out of a timeout, UAB kept the momentum and pushed the lead to 17-11. The Golden Eagles took advantage of a pair of Blazer errors to spark a 4-2 run, helping the Eagles cut the lead to 19-17. After the UAB timeout, Southern Miss continued to fight and eventually tied the set at 19-19. The teams traded points for the next six possessions. With the set tied at 22-22, Southern Miss ended the set scoring the final three points for the 25-22 win.
After taking a 2-0 lead, UAB rallied to tie the set at 2-2. The teams began trading points and battled to a 6-6 tie. With a slight momentum shift, the Golden Eagles pushed the lead to 12-8 behind a six-kill effort. Out of a UAB timeout, Southern Miss tacked on four straight points for the 16-8 lead. From there, the Golden Eagles closed out the set using a 9-5 run for the 25-13 win.
Gabby Deshotel led the Blazers with a match-high 22 kills to go with 13 digs. Amber also recorded a double-double with 24 assists and 12 digs. Emma Schroer picked up 16 digs.
Southern Miss hits the road for a pair of matches beginning at Rice on Oct. 29, before traveling to North Texas on Oct. 30.
