HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball team dropped its Conference USA match against UCF on Sunday by the score of 25-22, 25-8, 25-19.
Senior Halie Ecker was the lone Golden Eagle (6-16, 2-8) to post double-digit kills with 11. Kristen Fleming recorded a double-double with 26 assists and 10 digs while Elizabeth Rinaudo led the team with 15 digs.
UCF (9-13, 6-4) placed a trio of Knights in double figure kills led by Angelica Crump with 12 followed by Evija Vilde and DeLaina Sarden with 10 kills each. Meredith Murphy led the team with 11 digs.
UCF ran out to a5-1 lead to start the first set. Southern Miss battled back to tie the set at 6-6 on a 5-1 run. The teams traded points for the next 13 points until UCF got three straight kills for the 15-13 lead. UCF extended its lead to 18-14 before the Eagles closed the gap to 21-20. However, UCF outscored USM 4-2 down the stretch for the 25-22 win.
The second set was all UCF as the Knights raced out to an 8-0 lead. The Golden Eagles could not recover and fell 25-8.
The two teams battled to a 9-9 to start the third set. Southern Miss then scored three consecutive points in taking a 12-9 lead. UCF then used an 11-4 run for a 20-16 lead and that was all it took for the Knights to finish off the match with a 25-19 win.
The Golden Eagles will remain at home to host Marshall and East Carolina next weekend.
