ORLANDO, Fla. - Senior Halie Ecker tallied a double-double with 23 kills and 15 digs while freshmen Lydia Bonner and Quinci Hayward finished with 11 and 10 kills, respectively, when Southern Miss fell to UCF 3-1.
The Golden Eagles (6-15, 2-7) finished with 51 kills, 64 digs and 8.0 team blocks while UCF (8-13, 5-4) had 65 kills, 66 digs and 13.0 team blocks.
Elizabeth Rinaudo registered a team-high 24 digs and Alex Pfefferlee chipped in 11.
The two teams battled throughout the set until UCF closed out the set with a 7-0 run to take the first set 25-18. UCF finished with a .424 hitting percentage while holding USM to .194.
The teams started the second set battling back and forth until UCF was able to inch out to a 14-11 lead. The Knights was able to keep at least a two-point advantage down the stretch and force USM to take its final timeout. Southern Miss, then, closed out the set with a 5-1 run for the 25-23 win.
Southern Miss popped out to a 7-3 lead early, but UCF fought back and gradually closed the gap. USM led 17-12 when UCF used a timeout to slow the Eagles down. Out of the timeout, UCF used an 11-5 run to take a 23-22 lead. After going back and forth, UCF ended the set with back-to-back blocks for the 27-25 win.
UCF's momentum carried over into the fourth set as the Knights took an early lead. USM battled back to tie the set at 9-9 before UCF scored seven straight points for the 16-9 lead. The Golden Eagles could not fully recover as UCF took the match 25-15.
DeLaina Sarden led a quartet of Knights with 18 kills followed by Angelica Crump with 17, Ashley Gialenios had 13 and Evjia Vilde added 10. Meredith Murphy paced the defense with 25 digs and Dani Harrison added 15.
The two teams will battle on Sunday in Hattiesburg at 1 p.m.
