Volleyball Falls at Florida Atlantic in Three
BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Southern Miss volleyball team dropped a three-set match to Florida Atlantic (25-20, 25-17, 25-13) on Friday in Conference USA action.
The loss snapped a three match winning streak as the Golden Eagles fall to 15-9 overall and 4-3 in league play while FAU improved to 14-6 and 5-2.
Quinci Hayward led the way with 10 kills while Mary Pursell came up with 14 digs and Kristen Fleming recorded 25 assists. As a team, Southern Miss finished with 31 kills on a .057 hitting clip, 45 digs and 6.5 blocks. FAU had 38 kills on .270 hitting, eight aces, 40 digs and 6.0 blocks.
Southern Miss put the first point on the board but the Owls used an 8-2 run in taking a 9-3 lead. The Golden Eagles could not get their offense in gear as the FAU used a tough service game to keep the Eagles' offense in check. Southern Miss did not go quietly as the Golden Eagles fought off five set points before falling 25-20.
The teams traded points through the first 12 points until FAU scored 12 of the next 17 points in taking an 18-11 lead. Out of a timeout, Southern Miss made a run in cutting the lead to 21-17, but the Owls held on for the 25-17 win. FAU held the Golden Eagles to a .000 hitting with 10 kills while the Owls tallied 12 kills on .200 hitting.
FAU run out to a 4-1 lead to start the third set. The Owls eventually built a double-digit lead behind .323 hitting. The Golden Eagles never got their offense on track and hit -.105 in collecting only eight kills.
Southern Miss travels to FIU for a Sunday match with a 1 p.m. first serve.
