MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Southern Miss volleyball team rallied from a two-set deficit to push the match to a fifth set, but fell short in five sets by the scores of 23-25, 13-25, 25-19, 25-23, 5-15.
Senior Halied Ecker led the Golden Eagles with a match-high 20 kills with Jasmine Crowell and Quinci Hayward adding 13 and 10, respectively. Elizabeth Rinaudo finished with 21 digs. Hayward and Elise Ames each recorded five total blocks.
As a team, the Golden Eagles finished the match with 57 kills on .168 hitting, three aces, 56 digs and 9.0 team blocks while Memphis tallied 64 kills on .259 hitting, seven aces, 66 digs and 5.0 team blocks.
Memphis opened the first set with an early 9-5 lead and was able to maintain control throughout. Memphis held a 20-16 lead before USM rallied to cut the one on two occasions. However, the Tigers were able to hold off the Eagles for a 25-23 win.
Memphis bolted out to a 7-0 lead to start the second set. The Golden Eagles could not recover and fell 25-13.
Southern Miss scored seven of the first nine points to start the third set. Memphis came back to tie the set at 12-12 before USM got back-to-back kills from Ecker and a Memphis error in taking a 15-12 lead. The Eagles eventually pushed their lead to 21-16 before taking the set 25-19.
The fourth set featured 11 ties and three led changes. The teams battled early on before USM took an 11-6 lead off three Eagle kills and a Memphis error. The teams continued to battle midway through the set. With the set tied at 19-19, USM got a big block, a Tiger miscue and Ecker kill for the 22-19 lead. Memphis stayed close and cut the lead to 23-22 before Crowell put down a pair of kills for the 25-23 win.
The fifth set belong to the Memphis as the Tigers scored the nine of the first 12 points and never looked back in taking the set 15-5.
Memphis had five players with double digit kills led by Marija Jovanovic with 13, Altrese Hawkins and Lauren Hawkins had 12 kills apiece, Katie Meyer had 1 and Viktorija Teivane added 10. A. Petronijevic collected 22 digs.
Southern Miss returns to action on Oct. 19 when the Golden Eagles travel to UCF and return home to host the Knights on Oct. 21.
