BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Freshman Quinci Hayward tallied 12 kills on .407 hitting while sophomore Jasmine Crowell 10 kills, but it wasn't enough to get past UAB as Southern Miss fell in three sets, 3-0.
Senior Elizabeth Rinaudo collected 18 digs.
Southern Miss (6-13, 2-5) took the early 4-0 lead to start the first set and eventually led 9-4. Following a UAB timeout, the Blazers used an 8-1 run to take a 12-10 lead. The teams traded points following a Southern Miss timeout. USM held a 17-14 lead before UAB closed out the set with an 11-2 run for the 25-19 win.
UAB (11-11, 4-3) took control of the second set early and led 9-4, forcing the Eagles to take a timeout. Southern Miss battled back to close the gap to 12-8. The Blazers was able to keep at least a three-point cushion midway through the set. UAB eventually pushed ahead late and took the second set, 25-18.
UAB scored five of the first seven points to start the third set. Southern Miss then scored the next three points to tie the set at 5-5. The score went back and forth until UAB got a kill, a USM error and block for the 10-7 lead. USM managed to cut the lead to two late in the set, but UAB regained control and finished with an 8-2 run for a 25-19 win.
Kirsten Gallaher and Sam Skinner led UAB with 13 and 11 kills, respectively, while Rachel Fairbanks collected a match-high 24 digs. Alison Woods added a double-double with 36 assists and 10 digs.
Southern Miss is back in action on Saturday at Memphis at 7 p.m.
