Volleyball Falls to SMU

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-23, 25-13, 25-16) decision to SMU in volleyball action Sunday afternoon, falling to 6-12 overall and 2-4 in league play.
Southern Miss squandered a 20-14 lead in the first set when SMU outscored USM 11-3 down the stretch for a 25-23 win.
The Mustangs (6-13, 3-4) rode their momentum into the second set and captured a 25-13 win. SMU held USM to a .037 attack percentage as the Golden Eagles managed only eight kills.
SMU scored the first two points to start the third set, but Southern Miss regrouped and scored the next four for a 4-2 lead. The teams went back and forth for the next 13 points. USM got two quick points off back-to-back kills for a 12-9 lead. Out of the SMU timeout, the Mustangs went to work and regained the lead with a pair of kills and a couple of big blocks and an USM error for the 14-12 lead. After a Southern Miss timeout, the Eagles got a point back, but SMU ended the set with an 11-3 run in taking the set, 25-16.
Caroline Young registered a match-high 12 kills for SMU while Courtney Manning added 10. Susan Lewis collected 14 digs.
SMU out-hit, out-dug, out-blocked and out-served the Golden Eagles to the tune of 43 kills to 31, 42 digs to 35, 9.0 team blocks to 5.0 team blocks and eight aces to 2 aces.
Southern Miss will take to the road next weekend for matches at UAB on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m., and at Memphis on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m.
