Volleyball Eagles Fall 3-1 to Tulsa

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Senior Halie Ecker recorded a team-high 14 kills and Elizabeth Rinaudo posted her fifth 20-plus digs, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Eagles fell to Tulsa 3-1 (25-21, 19-25, 8-25, 14-25) in Conference USA action Friday night.
Tulsa out-hit and out-dug the Eagles. The Golden Hurricane had 54 kills on a .217 hitting clip, had 75 digs and registered 10.0 team blocks. Southern Miss finished the match with 34 kills on .041 hitting, 71 digs and 10.0 team blocks.
Southern Miss rallied from a 6-1 deficit in the opening set, using a 5-1 run for a 6-6 tie. The two teams battled back and forth before USM forged ahead 16-14 and forced Tulsa into a timeout. Out of the timeout, Tulsa outscored USM 4-1 for an 18-17 lead. Following a Southern Miss timeout, the teams battled to a 20-20 tied before USM got a Quinci Hayward kill and Tulsa error in for the 22-20 lead. The Eagles ended the set scoring thee of the last four points for the 25-21 win.
Tulsa ran out to a 5-1 lead to start the second set, then, put its offense in high gear in taking the second set, 25-19. The Golden Hurricane out-hit the Eagles .227 to .116 as well as using a tough serving game.
After a 1-1 tie to start the third set, Tulsa then scored the next 12 of the next 13 points for a 12-2 lead. Southern Miss could not close the gap as Tulsa finished with a .400 hitting while holding the Eagles to -.182 for the 25-8 win.
Tulsa scored the first seven points to start the final set and never looked back for a 25-14 win. Once again, the Golden Hurricane got a strong serving game while the Eagles to -.027 hitting.
Tyler Henderson led all players with a match-high 22 kills while running mate Jessica Adams came up with a match-high 29 digs. Kellie Culbertson had 12 digs and Jordan Clampitt added a double-double with 32 assists and 11 digs. Diana Silva also had 11 digs.
Southern Miss will host SMU on Sunday at 12 p.m.
