Golden Eagle Volleyball Falls in Five to North Texas

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball team dropped its second-straight Conference USA in with a 3-2 loss to North Texas a five-set match with scores of 25-21, 17-25, 25-18, 15-25, 8-15.

USM falls to 9-8 overall and 0-2 in league play while North Texas improved to 11-8 and 3-0.

Quinci Hayward led the Golden Eagles with 17 kills followed by Rachel Johnson with 11 and Jasmine Crowell added 10. Mary Pursell came up with 29 digs while Stephany Purdue had 19, Alex Pfefferle and Shelby Russell added 12 and 10 digs, respectively. Kristin Fleming tallied 53 assists.

Southern Miss ran out to a 6-0 lead before North Texas halted the run with a kill. The Mean Green put together a run that cut the Eagles' lead to 11-10. From there, the Golden Eagles took advantage of back-to-back NT errors while adding a pair of kills from Purdue to push the lead to 15-10. North Texas rallied down the stretch using a 9-5 run to get the score to 21-19. USM then closed out the set scoring four of the final six points for the 25-21 win.

After Southern Miss took a quick 2-0 to start the second set, North Texas then grabbed the momentum and scored nine of the next 11 points in taking 9-4 lead. After a Southern Miss timeout, North Texas continued its torrid pace and finished the set with a 25-17 win. The Mean Green put down 22 kills on a .347 hitting clip.

The Golden Eagles scored four of the first five points, but NT came right back to tie the set at 4-4 using a pair of USM errors and an ace. The teams battled back and forth for the next 23 points before North Texas called a timeout with the Eagles leading 17-14. After the Mean cut the lead to 17-15, the Golden Eagles got a kill from Lydian Bonner and back to back blocks for the 20-15 lead. USM held on for the 25-18 win.

North Texas turned the tables against the Eagles as the Mean Green out-hit USM .308 to .071 in pounding out 14 kills. The teams battled to a 7-7 tie before North Texas used a 6-2 for the 13-9 lead. From there, it was all North Texas as the Mean Green finished the set strong in claiming a 25-15 win.

North Texas carried the momentum into the fifth set in running out to a 5-1 lead. Southern Miss was able to cut the lead to 8-6. Following a timeout, the Golden Eagles could not jump start their offense as North Texas took the final set, 15-8.

Carnae Dillard led the all players with a match-high 23 kills to go with 26 digs. Karissa Flack netted 18 kills while Shelby Tamura came up with 20 digs. Analisse Shannon added 16 digs for the Mean Green. Amy Henard had 43 assists.

Southern Miss is back in action on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Rice.
