Volleyball Eagles Rally for 3-1 Victory over Charlotte

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball snapped a two-match losing streak after as the Golden Eagles rallied from a set down in posting a 3-1 victory over visiting Charlotte on Friday night in Reed Green Coliseum.

Southern Miss improved to 13-8 and 2-2 in C-USA while Charlotte dropped to 12-8 and 1-2.

"We stressed in practice all week that everyone had a job to do," Head Coach Amanda Berkley said. "Tonight, I believe they did their jobs to help get this win. We still have some things we need to work on, but I was pleased with the efforts tonight."

Sophomore Stephany Purdue led a quartet of Golden Eagles with a match-high 20 kills followed by Quinci Hayward with 13, Jasmine Crowell had 11 and Lydia Bonner added 10. Mary Pursell picked up a match-high 23 digs while Kristen Fleming tallied 54 assists.

Southern Miss out hit and out-dig the Niners as the Golden Eagles finished with 62 kills on a .271 hitting clip and had 51 digs. Charlotte recorded 44 kills on .200 hitting with 37 digs and 12.0 team blocks.

Charlotte took the opening set 25-23 after rallying from a 20-16 deficit. Charlotte was able to hold the Eagles' offense in check using a big blocking game.

The teams traded points to start the second set. Southern Miss finally forged ahead 7-4. Charlotte fought back scoring 11 of the next 18 points in taking a 15-14 lead. Charlotte built an 18-14 lead before the Golden Eagles recorded three straight kills in getting the score 18-17. Following a 49er timeout, the Black and Gold scored five of the next six points for the 22-19 lead. Southern Miss held on for the 25-20 win.

Southern Miss led from start to finish in the third set in capturing a 25-13 win. The Golden Eagles finished with a .333 hitting percentage in tallying 17 kills while hold Charlotte to just seven kills.

The two teams battled through much of the fourth set. Southern Miss got a kill, an ace and block in taking an 11-8 lead. The Golden Eagles led by as many as four points down the stretch, but Charlotte rallied to cut the lead 22-20 before the home team called a timeout. Southern Miss finished the set strong after scoring three of the final four points for the 25-21 win.

Claire Kreuz led Charlotte with 13 kills while Shelby Green added 11 digs. Savanah Gaster finished with nine total blocks.

Southern Miss will return home to host a pair of matches next weekend when North Texas and Marshall comes to Hattiesburg on Oct. 10 and 12, respectively.
